How To Make Coffee Without A Coffee Machine

How To Make Coffee Without A Coffee Machine

Interestingly, around 45% of Americans currently own a drip coffee maker, with over 42% owning a single-cup brewer. Of course, there are some overlaps between the two. But for those of us who are avid java fans who don’t have one, don’t have any access to a wall socket ( when you’re out and about ) or even those of us who prefer to make their cup of joe the classic way. Below are 4 easy ways on how you can make your coffee without a coffee machine. Some of the simplest ways to start is by using either a French Press or a pour-over coffee maker. But, if you don’t want to invest your hard earned money into new equipment, then these steps will help you to make a coffee with items which you may already have around your home.

Before we get started, there are a few good rules to follow when it comes to coffee:

  • Watch your temperature. To ensure that you don’t burn your coffee, it is important to have the right temp, with the ideal temperature of your water being around 200 fahrenheit.
  • Ensure your coffee is as fresh as possible. It is more ideal if you can purchase your coffee beans whole and grind them to your preferred coarseness. This will ensure you get the best flavor out of your beans.
  • Know when your beans were roasted. So why am I asking you this? The main reason is that you should use beans roasted within two week so that you get the best homemade coffee you can.

4 Easy Ways To Make Coffee Without A Coffee Machine

Make Turkish Coffee

If you’re looking for a more sophisticated way of making coffee, then Turkish coffee is definitely the one for you! This method is similar to the stovetop method mentioned below, however it can be a little more fussy. Creating a thick, frothy yet strong coffee brew!

It’s important to note that this is not the full traditional method you would expect to make Turkish coffee, but it’s definitely a fantastic way to get a deep brew. Also, the grinds should be in the cup at the end so don’t worry!

  • Let’s begin by putting 6 ounces of cold water, this is per serving so make sure you use 6 ounces per person. Pour this water in a small saucepan and place it on a low heat.
  • Grab your coffee and add in 1 heaped tablespoon per serving. If you take sugar then it would be best to add it now.
  • Bring the whole mixture to a boil.
  • When you can see that the water is just about to boil, take it off of the heat and skim off the foam that has been created. Place the foam into your mug(s).
  • Place the pan back onto the heat and again, keep an eye out for when it gets near boiling again. Once it does, remove it from the heat.
  • Pour just over half of the coffee into your mug(s).
  • Return the pan to the heat for the final time. Boil the whole mixture for 15 seconds, then take it off the heat.
  • Empty the remaining mixture into your mug(s). Allow them to sit for around 3 minutes so that all the coffee is able to sink to the bottom.

Brew Using A Stovetop Cup

Brew Using A Stovetop Cup

Although this is an old-school method, well I say old-school it’s more like a traditional way to make coffee if you don’t want to use the microwave. This will also work if you don’t have any power, of course as long as you have a gas stove.

  • So let’s begin by adding 6 ounces of cold water per portion. Pour this water into a small saucepan over a medium heat.
  • Add 1 heaped tablespoon to the pan, do this for each serving. Adding sugar now if you so require it.
  • Bring the whole mixture to the boil.
  • Ensure that you stir occasionally, allow the mixture to boil for 2 minutes.
  • Take the pan from the heat, leave it to sit for around 4-5 minutes. Make sure you pour out the coffee slowly and carefully from your pan, this will ensure that the grounds remain in the pan and don’t get into your cup!
  • Add further sugar and cream if you require.

Make A Coffee Bag

Create A “Coffee Bag

If you’re looking for a little less bitter tasting coffee, then I highly recommend that you stock up on coffee filters. This method is also using a stovetop.

  • Place one filter onto your worktop and add two heaped tablespoons of your favorite coffee. We are using more coffee in this method to account for the filter and the amount of flavor which may “escape”.
  • Bring together the ends of the filter and tie it with string or twine. Think of this like a tea-bag style parcel. Place this bag into your mug(s).
  • In a small pan, bring some water to the boil.
  • Ensure the parcel is saturated in enough water to completely soak the coffee grounds. Leave these coffee grounds to soak for around half a minute.
  • Once you’ve left them to soak, pour 6 ounces of water into your mug.
  • Allow the coffee bag to steep for 4-5 minutes, then remove the coffee parcel.
  • Add your sugar/cream if you require.

Faux French Press

Use A Faux French Press

This is a simple method to get the same effect you’d get with a French Press coffee machine. With this method, you will use a mug, bowl and spoon!

  • Let’s start with boiling water in a saucepan on the stovetop.
  • In a large deep bowl, begin by adding a single heaped teaspoon of coffee per person you are serving.
  • Then pour over a small amount of the boiling water over your coffee grounds to saturate them. Once saturated, add 6 ounces of water per person per serving.
  • Get your spoon, to press down your grounds into the bottom of the bowl.
  • Press your spoon down on top of the coffee grounds, then pour the remainder of the liquid into your mug(s).
  • Add in your sugar and cream as required.
